Janie’s Immunity

In Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston begins the book with a theme of envy and jealousy towards Janies aesthetic appearance. The woman on the porch translate their emotions into hate filled judgements and remarks. Hurston gives us glimpse of how easy it was back then to get criticized for certain attributes that others may have lacked. It is easy to spout off  hateful remarks but does the does it really project the feelings they have towards her. for example, ”She ain’t even worth talking’ after," Lulu Moss drawled through her nose. She sits high, but she looks low. Dat’s what Ah say ‘bout dese ole women running’ after young boys." (1.12). In this quote, she has harsh words thrown at her but their only out of spite. Janie differs from many other characters in the book by having a decent bank account balance. she seems to be self supportive. She follows someone she loves but has finds herself an outcast in the middle working class community. Many things account for Janies battle against adversity.

In a world where women are discriminated for stepping up in a male dominated society: Janie strives to find life of without boundaries; ending up by her leaving her mundane husband logan. Since Janie is an outsider to the many classes portrayed in this book, she seeks things that will make her happy. Janie’s decision making throughout the book opens up her options to countless potential goals. Through Meeting tea cake, experiences things that woman hardly ever get to do.Tea Cake encourages her to work, play checkers, speak out, fish, and shoot a gun. Through her many relationships with men of different social classes. She prefers a man with personal power instead of power established in leadership. After her unfortunate outcomes of her relationships she finds the someone who shares the same principles of naturalism and free spirited lifestyle. Her and Tea Cake try to break the barrier of gender by not living by the rules set on them. For this, I believe is the reason Janie forgives Tea Cake for his tragic break down.

In all, Hurston pulls the attention of readers by creating a unique and fulfilling life that Janie leads. She dismiss the theme of portraying the lives of black people as a constant struggle. Through her many battles with bad relationships. She finds peace and knowledge from her past tribulations. Hurston leaves us with Janie remaining a free spirit that rises above her social norms and challenges mainly the idea that life for women doesn't have to be confined.

                                                                                          “The Good Life”
This term "the good life" has a different meaning to everybody. Although this term generally means for one to reach their dreams and live with peace and pure joy. based on if you're a man or woman, the phrase can have several different definitions. or depending on being rich or poor, anyone will have an answer. What some people might find others as having "the good life", others may think differently. giving and receiving respect are some aspects of enjoying life as well as acquiring pure happiness day by day. In most peoples situations, experiencing a pleasurable life is a challenge that many people face during some duration of a lifetime.
My personal outlook of having a good life has definitely changed over the course of my life. what I may think of "the good life today" might be different in the near future. If I did live what I think is a good life, it would have many desired aspects like gaining peace and respect between everyone. More to this list would be to spend my time trying new things and obtaining good memories as a result. fixing, learning, and driving cars would be something I would enjoy to experience in my life. The thrill of driving something that I put my time and effort to build contributes a huge feeling of accomplishment. what I also get out of having the drive to work on cars is having a challenge and a goal worth reaching."The good life" is Doing something that I enjoy unconditionally. If im driving, I want to be free of meeting others expectations. Not worrying about anything and enjoying the moment is one of the greatest things someone can experience.
Lastly I think my life should be full of thrills and excitement when the opportunity is available. I want to experience things that have a slight edginess to it because it will only make me appreciate life more.
For many people including me, usually need  material things to live a good life. These material things are different depending on the person. It gives us something to occupy our time pleasantly. We look forward to it or we reminisce on the experiences we've had involving it. Whatever the material thing is, as long as it makes someone happy, having it involved in someones life is a decision one can make freely. I feel that cars are something I take interest in and I need them in my life simply because they make me happy. Having non-material things in my life that make me happy is important in order to have a good life. Having a family that loves me and supports me when I need reassurance is something I need in my life. To have control over my life I would like to be able to make decisions freely for my convenience. I would want the opportunity to choose to be independent or involved with other people when I want if I feel isolated at times or over involved.
In conclusion my idea of a good life is to have total control  over my actions and decisions, with minimal worries. I would want to live every minute at the fullest extent with no regrets. It is impossible to have one way of living be the best way to live life because no ones the same and every one's definition of "the good life" is different.

Parachutes: Does Size Matter?

Introduction and Purpose

The Primary objective of this project is to learn what make a parachute work. The project will test different size radius of a parachute. This is a great project for people who are particularly interested in the subject of aerodynamics.  A lot of fascinating information about the parachute may educate people about what role air and gravity have when using one. Conducting various experiments hopefully will answer the question, what causes a subject  to slow down when attached to a parachute?

Background

on Oct. 22, 1797 André-Jacques Garnerin's took daring leap on at Parc Monceau in Paris. The 28-year-old leaped from a balloon using a seven-metre silk parachute, successfully becoming the first man to deploy a parachute and land safely on the ground.

Up to modern times, the parachute is most comonly used used in the extreme sport of skydiving. in this sport, a person jumps out of an airplane from a very high altitude, flies through the air, and releases a parachute to help them fall safely to the ground. The reason why a person is able to safely land on the ground is because the parachute produces air resistance. In the process of parachute deployment, The chute is pushed up by the air causing a force opposite to the force of gravity on the payload, causing the skydiver to slow down.

Hypothesis

MateBeing obtuse and large, parachutes generate a lot of air resistance also known as drag. When the parachute is attached to a falling payload, the sizably drag engendered by a parachute helps reduce the payload’s fall speed by acting against the payload's weight. In opinion, parachute drag will increase with a bigger radius of the chute thus reducing the payload's speed.

Material

  • heavy weight garbage bags

  • metric ruler

  • scissors

  • washers

  • twist ties

  • light weight string

  • stopwatch

  • note pad

  • pencil

Experimental Procedure

1.)Each parachute will be made out of the garbage bag material, so first cut open the garbage bags to make a flat sheet of plastic.

2.)You will make a series of parachutes of different sizes, from large to small. Each parachute will be square in shape, so the four sides will each be of the same length. A list of

sizes to try are shown in the data table below:

3.)Cut out each of the four differently sized parachutes from the garbage bag material. One trick is to fold the plastic sheet in half twice so that it is four layers thick. Then cut the two edges (opposite the folded sides) down to half of the length you want your square to be. When you unfold it, you will have your square!

4.)Tie a knot in each of the four corners of your square. The knots will be used to anchor your string.

5.)Cut out four pieces of string for each parachute. Each piece of string should be 40 cm long.

6.)Tie one end of each piece of string around one of the four knots, positioning the string right above the knot.

7.)Hold the center of the plastic sheet in one hand and pull all strings with the other to collect them. Tie the free end of the strings together with an overhand knot:

8.)Attach 4 washers to the bundle of strings with a twist tie. Be sure that each parachute has the same number of washers attached.

9.)Bring a stopwatch and the parachutes to a high but safe surface for your tests, about 2 meters from the ground. some good places to conduct the experiment is on a balcony or a playground structure.

10.)Using your stopwatch, time how long it takes in seconds for each parachute to fall to the ground. Test each parachute three times, and make an average of your data. Calculate the average by adding together your three times, and then dividing your answer by three. Record your results on a data table, example of data table

11.)Now make a graph of your data. Make a line graph of time vs. surface area. "Time, in seconds," should be on the y axis, and "Surface area, in square cm," should be on the x-axis. After you connect the dots, your line may slope up or down. analyze the differences of time and compare your conclusion to your hypothesis.

Conclusion

Overall, the studies and experiments conclude that a parachute does depend on the chute radius for more or less air resistance. However many different factors are involved in how fast or in this case, how slow, a subject falls. My hypothesis was accurate, being that size significantly affects the speed of falling.
